About Beer Kegs

By: J.Morgan

If you drink beer, then you have most likely been to a keg party before. Keg parties can be fun and exciting, but how much do you know about getting a keg? If you were hosting a keg party, would you know how to get started?

Kegs come in two different sizes: full size and pony size. The full size keg is 15.5 gallons, which will normally serve approximately 50 people about three 12-oz servings. The pony keg is 7.5 gallons (half the size of the full keg). It serves about 25 people three 12-oz cups of beer.

Now you have a guideline that can help you make the right choice when throwing a keg party so you won’t run out of beer right when things are just beginning to get exciting. You also have a choice between which type of keg pump you would like to use on your keg. The original hand pump is the cheapest, but sometimes can be a little difficult to use.

Steps in buying a beer keg:

  • Start out by selection the liquor store that you want to use. You can check with different ones to see who offers you the best price and to see what options are available when it comes to the brand of beer they have. Make sure you bring your ID with you because you will be carded when buying alcohol.

  • Now you need to decide how much beer you want to buy. Will it be the pony keg or the full size keg? This, of course, will depend on how many guests you plan to entertain—and for how long.

  • Choose the pump that you want to use with the keg of beer and determine how you will get it to your home. Some stores will offer delivery for a small fee and if you don’t have any help in moving the keg, this is your best option. Otherwise, make sure you have a truck and some friends to help you. A keg of beer can weigh a lot more than you think it might.

When you buy a keg of beer, you will need to put down a deposit because once the party is over, you must return the empty keg to the store. You will get your deposit back when it is returned in the same condition it was rented out.

Liquor stores charge different rates for the deposit so the amount you pay will depend on where you go and what size keg of beer you buy. Kegs are the perfect addition to any beer party and are a great way to keep your guests happy and entertained. Plus, they make it a lot easier to clean up after the party ends.
